Ever since LLMs burst onto the scene a few years ago, artificial intelligence has been changing the ways in which we design and experience websites. Web design has never been straightforward; once upon a time, it required technical expertise and a lot of development time, and over the course of a few decades, designers settled on a rulebook that they thought would stand the test of time.

But now, AI has taken that rulebook and ripped it to shreds. Now, glacial development timeframes can be rapidly accelerated using intelligent (if limited) tools that are able to support at every stage of the process. They can generate multiple layout options to choose from, personalise user experiences, which you can argue means that designers can explore the creative process more thoroughly and more efficiently.

As a result, it seems that we’re now in the midst of a new era of web design; the paradigm has shifted once again, for the first time since the dawn of website builders and content management systems, like Squarespace and Shopify.

So, without any further ado, let’s take a look at how AI is transforming web design.

Read: The Rise of Intelligent Meeting Rooms in Modern Enterprises

Intelligent Design Processes

There are a lot of AI-powered tools out there which can supposedly help during the earlier stages of the design process. The best ones are those that successfully manage to smooth out the creases in the design workflow by automating the most repetitive tasks. Now, we can use tools to create several different layout options from which to choose, as well as recommendations for colour palettes and typography. Said tools work by analysing huge sets of data (potential designs, in this case) and producing results that fit a polished modern aesthetic.

One of the main upsides of these tools is that they allow designers to spend more time focusing on creative direction and strategy, rather than spending hours upon hours on adjusting spacing by millimetres here and there, or testing out different colour combinations. Instead, they can easily find the most promising concepts and focus their efforts on refining those.

A More Personal User Experience

Without a doubt, one of AI’s biggest strengths when it comes to web design is its ability to deliver a much more personalised experience. With the right tools, a developer can examine user behaviour, preferences, and analyse the ways in which they interact with a site to tailor more bespoke content to them in real time.

When visitors find a website that can adapt to their needs and give them relevant recommendations, they’re often suitably wooed and will be much more likely to stick around. As a result, the number of engaged sessions is likely to increase, along with conversions.

Improved User Interface Design

AI is improving UI design by identifying the best ways to improve both usability and accessibility. It probably isn’t a surprise to hear that machine learning is capable of evaluating how users interact with different aspects of a site, like whether they really make use of different buttons or navigational menus. These insights can then be taken on board by designers and used to help them craft experiences that are more intuitive.

On the topic of accessibility, there are plenty of tools out there that can automatically alter contrast, font sizes, and colour palettes to be more accommodating of different users’ needs. This can help to create more inclusive digital settings for everyone, where more people feel more comfortable and confident engaging.

Content Generation and Optimisation

Writing good content is obviously an important part of web design, and it’s also one of AI’s most notorious use cases. There is a wide variety of AI writing tools available on the market that are able to generate text for websites and are capable of including all of the hallmarks of good web design, like eye-catching headlines, calls to action, and memorable product descriptions.

But there are limitations to it. Users are now growing wiser to the telltale signs of AI writing, like an overabundance of negative parallelisms (‘it’s not just X, it’s Y’) and hypophora (asking a question and immediately following up with an answer). If you’re considering using AI for content, it might be best to use it for an initial plan or draft, before adding your own human personality. If users can sniff out AI-written content, the site risks feeling inauthentic, and they might assume that corners have been cut elsewhere.

On top of just generating content, AI can help with content optimisation by wading through performance metrics, analysing them, and coming up with helpful insights, like recommendations based on how users are engaging.

What the Future Holds

As technology continues to advance, AI’s influence on web design will likely only continue to expand. New innovations will bring feats that were previously reserved for the realms of science fiction into reality, and along with them, capabilities that promise better automation and personalisation.

AI’s dominance will continue to be felt all over the world, by titans of tech in Silicon Valley, web developers in Manchester, and programmers in Mumbai. As it becomes more sophisticated, the role of the designer will evolve into something less operational and more strategic, permitting a stronger emphasis on creativity and user experience.
